RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST 1 (TELESCOPE OPERATOR – ARO) UPDATED

Area: Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO)

The department of Steward Observatory seeks to fill the position of a Research Technologist I. The selected candidate will be responsible for operating radio telescopes within Steward Observatory’s Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO), which include the 12m Telescope on Kitt Peak, 50 miles southwest of Tucson, and the 10m Submillimeter Telescope (SMT) on Mt Graham, 150 miles to the northeast. We are looking for a motivated candidate who can work independently at a remote location to operate a world-class submm radio telescope. ARO telescopes undertake astronomical observations for University of Arizona personnel as well as national and international researchers. As part of the Event Horizon Telescope, once a year they participate in observations that have resulted in the first images of black holes. As member of a small team of operators, this position requires working for extended periods of typically 1 week at elevations of up to 10,500 feet. Duties will be performed with a large amount of independence.

COMPUTING SCIENCES RESEARCHER II

Area: Engineering and Technical Services Group (ETS) and Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics (CAAO)

The selected candidate will support research in ground and space-based telescopes. They will work closely with mechanical, software, and optical engineers to accomplish the goals of the Principal Investigator and their program. Scientific software engineering and data processing skills to develop and operate software systems for science data processing and analysis for space missions. Strives to bring creative and innovative ideas to solve exciting problems. Responsible for the development of data analysis and visualization tools, implementation of scientific processing algorithms, data processing and data analysis, maintenance of existing systems, and dissemination of scientific data. Collaborates with scientists, mission operators, engineers, students, and other colleagues and stakeholders. PROGRAM MANAGER

Area: Engineering and Technical Services Group (ETS)

The department of Steward Observatory seeks to fill the position of Program Manager (Research Program Administrative Manager V). This position will use their knowledge and expertise in mechanical and aerospace engineering principles for the project management, design, manufacturing, integration, and development of new and existing equipment on space-based telescope missions. The individual will administer and oversee the development of a space-based telescope from concept to launch using best practices according to industry standards established for space projects. Technical work for these projects includes optics fabrication, telescope control systems, primary and secondary mirror support, instrumentation development and various supporting functions for sub-systems of the telescope during development, fabrication and operation.

R & D ELECTRICAL ENGINEER II

Area: Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics (CAAO)

The selected candidate will support research in ground and space-based telescopes. They will work closely with mechanical, software, and optical engineers to accomplish the goals of the Principal Investigator and their program. Applying known electrical engineering theories and principles the Electrical Engineer designs and builds electronic systems to support research. This includes designing, fabricating, testing, and implementing electronic hardware to accomplish the goals of the principal investigator. Evaluates findings to develop new concepts, products, equipment, or processes, or to develop applications of findings to new uses.

R&D SYSTEMS ENGINEER II – Multiple Openings

Area: Engineering and Technical Services Group (ETS) and Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics (CAAO)

The candidate should be experienced in working with multidisciplinary teams that have successfully delivered complex, high-precision, opto-mechanical systems. The candidate will work on high-level documentation such as the Requirements Document in addition to all other lower-level requirement documents that establish the baseline design of the subsystem. The candidate must have good communication skills and be a representative of the engineering team in a professional manner both at all times on behalf of Steward Observatory and CAAO (Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics). The candidate must be able to work with input from working engineering groups to establish and document project requirements.

Program Coordinator Sr.

The Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory is a world leader in space and ground-based telescopes. This Program Coordinator, Sr. position assists the Director and Associate Director of Steward Observatory/Dept. of Astronomy in administrative, operational and technical activities related to the research and operations of the department. The individual will provide project technical support in producing proposals, monitoring task orders and managing resources based on the scope of projects and Principal Investigator's goals. Additionally, the candidate prepares periodic reports, financial statements and records on program activities, progress, status or other special reports for management or outside agencies. Frequently interacts and maintains liaison with students, faculty, staff and outside/community agencies in facilitating department and program objectives. Is also responsible for communication, meeting and event coordination, financial activities, travel planning and reconciliation, and reimbursements on behalf of the research projects.

Research Program Administrator

Area: NASA Grant Project: Alien Earths

The department of Steward Observatory seeks to fill a full-time position of a Research Program Administrator (Research Program Administrative Officer II).

The selected candidate will assist Professor Daniel Apai in logistical and financial aspects of managing major NASA grant project "Alien Earths" and "Pandora", as well as managing finances for a number of other grant accounts, including pre-award proposals and budgets, and post-award monitoring and reporting. Coordinate information dissemination to a team of over 40 US and international collaborators. Facilitate travel planning and process expense transactions. Facilitate meetings and events. Compile and publish newsletters and promotional materials and manage Alien Earths website. Additional tasks supporting Dr. Apai's projects may be assigned.

Outreach Instructional Assistant III

The department of Steward Observatory seeks to fill a part-time Outreach Instructional Assistant III position. The selected candidate will be responsible for organizing and leading all aspects of the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter's nightly, public star gazing programs. Utilizing the Observatory's .8-meter and .6-meter telescopes situated at the summit of Mount Lemmon, the program leader is responsible for facilitating the astronomical outreach program and engaging guests in exploring natural phenomenon and the wonders of the night sky. Postdoctoral Research Associate I – Dr. Ewan Douglas

Assistant Research Professor

Steward Observatory seeks to fill an Assistant Research Professor position to support projects within the Center for Astronomical Adaptive Optics (CAAO) and the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab (RFCML.) The faculty member will bridge the gap between science and engineering, working closely with astronomers and engineers to commission world-class general purpose and high-contrast imaging instruments and observatories. Projects include support of NASA and university funded research into future space telescopes for general astrophysics and high-contrast imaging, supporting the RFCML in researching and developing space telescope concepts and the UA Space Astrophysics Lab’s Space Coronagraph Optical Bench (SCoOB), researching high-contrast technology readiness through simulation, prototyping, and test.
