Fourier Transform
Microwave Spectrometer
Block Diagram
Below is a block diagram of the fourier transform
microwave spectrometer.
The spectrometer consists of a Fabry-Perot cavity made with
two spherical mirrors inside a large steel vacuum chamber.
Molecules are pulsed into the cavity using a solenoid value and Teflon
nozzle. Microwaves are pulsed into the cavity, which excites the
molecules and when they decay back to a lower state, they emit
radiation, which is detected as a free induction decay (FID).
This FID is fourier transformed into a spectrum in frequency.
This spectrometer is currently in development and many improvements and
new techniques will be used in future work.
