Title: The Relativistic Two-body Problem
The Newtonian two-body problem is simple to pose and solve. A comparable understanding of the relativistic version (involving compact objects and/or high velocities), on the other hand, has been a decades-long research goal of the general relativity community. I will give an overview of the various regimes of interest (both theoretically and observationally) and then describe some of my contributions. I will emphasize the most dramatically non-Newtonian behavior, such as a “bobbing” up and down of the orbital plane for spinning black hole binaries.
