The University of Arizona is a partner in the Event Horizon Telscope [1] project. The EHT unites submillimeter telescopes across the world to achieve the highest angular resolution of any astronomical facility. The key scientific aim is to image the event horizon regions of the black hole at the center of our galaxy, Sgr A*, and at the center of the galaxy M87, thereby testing fundamental physics in the strong gravity limit. Steward Observatory his contributed telescopes, technical development, and detector technology to the array since the inception of the project. Additionally, we have faculty whose expertise in compact object physics and general relativity will help lead the scientific interpretation of the unprecedented observations.
