Mount Lemmon Skycenter

The Mount Lemmon SkyCenter, part of Steward Observatory and the College of Science serves to connect the public with the cutting edge space science research and discovery being conducted at the University of Arizona. Utilizing the world-class resources atop Mount Lemmon, our programs provide the public exciting opportunities to make their own exploration of our Universe. Through hands on use of telescopes, opportunities exist for members of the public to participate in astrophotography and stargazing programs as well as to purchase observing time on the largest dedicated publicly accessible telescope in the southwest, The Schulman Telescope.

Currently, the SkyCenter operates two telescopes for public use:

The Schulman Telescope is an ideal instrument for amateur astronomers world-wide desiring to collect data for astrophotography. This telescope is outfitted with an SBIG STX 16803 CCD camera with an anti-blooming gate and broadband, 65mm RGB filters (AstroDon GenII), a Clear filter, and a 4.5nm H-alpha filter.  This telescope is also utilized in the early evenings for on-site public outreach programs.

The Phillips Telescope is used extensively by the UA Sky School and is also available to amateur astronomers on-site and for use in remote data acquisition. This telescope is also outfitted with an STX 16803 CCD camera, however the filter wheel has BVRI filters and a 4.5nm H-alpha filter. The filter set is designed with scientific photometry projects in mind.
