We have two color printers that are available for anyone to use. Both are located in Room 357. Printer "cps1" is a high quality, Tektronix PostScript color printer. Printer "cps3" is a lower quality, Hewlett Packard PostScript color printer. Costs are approximately $4.50 per page (paper and transparency) for cps1, $0.15 per page (paper) for cps3, and $0.15 per page (transparency) for cps3. Instructions for using cps1 follow. The usage of cps3 is similar. ** DO NOT USE REGULAR COPY/LASER PAPER IN THE TEKTRONIX COLOR PRINTER! ** REGULAR PAPER WILL DAMAGE THE PRINTER! To produce a color print on the Tektronix PostScript color printer: 1. Check that no paper tray is loaded in the printer. 2. Check that there is nothing in the printer queue: lpq -Pcps1 3. Check the file you want to print (say, plot.ps) is a PostScript file: file plot.ps should report: plot.ps: PostScript document You should only have one page in each postscript file, and you should print each postscript file with a separate lpr command. 4. Queue the print (say, plot.ps) lpr -s -Pcps1 plot.ps If your files are large, you should be careful about the spool space on the spool host (astro). Log into the spool host and do a "df /" command. You may have to queue your files up one at a time. Alternatively, executing the above "lpr -s" command on the spool host avoids copying your files into the spool area. 5. Verify your print is in the queue: lpq -Pcps1 6. Load the appropriate paper tray into the printer: The trays are labelled on the ends of the trays: Paper: This is for a paper print. Make sure the shiny side of the paper is facing up. Transparency: This is for a transparency. Make sure the pull-tab corner is toward the outside. The transparency material looks white because there is a white paper backing. After the print on the transparency material is made, you can remove the paper backing. Note: Only the proper Tektronix paper and transparency materials can be used in this printer. Any other material will damage the printer. The Hewlett Packard Deskjet uses ordinary photocopier or laser printer paper, but special transparencies. 7. When your print has finished, remove the tray. If the paper jams, do not attempt to fix it yourself. Contact the Digital Lab (Room 371) or any member of the Computer Support Group. 8. Sign up for your print on the sign-up sheet. Supply an account number.
