How to use the Event Log

Short and simple version: click on a hyperlinked date and a list of events for that date will appear.

More complex version: The Event Log is a monthly or yearly calendar of events. It usually appears in its monthly mode as shown in the figure below. The Year link can be used to display an annual Event Log. This usually takes a few seconds to appear as it takes a while to check the database for an entire year. The Month link displays a list of events for the current month (the month shown on the calendar).

For each month, hyperlinked dates have events associated with them. Links are usually underlined or colored blue on most systems. Click on a link to display a list of events for that date, then choose a link from the list to display the event.

Cookies are used to maintain session information. These cookies are harmless, and disappear from your system when you close your browser.

Jumping to a new Month and/or Year

Use the drop-down lists to set a new month and/or year, then click the GO button. The annual Event Log has a single drop-down box for the year.

Return to the current date

Click now (under the GO button) to return to the current month/year.

Searching for things

Clicking Search displays a search page. You can enter a word or words to search for within the events database. You can use and ? as you might expect: matches anything (yes* will match yessir, yes, yesterday, etc), and ? matches single letters (ca? matches cab, cat, car, etc.).

New Events

Clicking New Event displays a page where you can post a new event. Depending on the desires of your webmaster, this may or may not require a login and password, or this option may not appear at all.

Note: You can enter an event for any time in the future, but your webmaster must set the displayable years to include that year or you won't be able to jump to that year (and display the event) via the Year drop-down box. That is, if you enter an event for 2050 but you can't make the Event Log calendar display jump to the year 2050 you won't be able to directly see that event reflected in the event log.

Uploads You may write your event posting on your personal computer and upload it to the Event Log rather than typing it into the text box within the new event form. Please be sure to obey the instructions regarding plain-text files that appear on that form: You can't upload a word processor document.

Moderated If this site is moderated, then these postings will be examined by a moderator before being viewable to the general public.

Text formatting: you can use a simple formatting style called Structured Text, explained here, or you can just type in whatever you wish.

Changes You can't make changes to events or dates once you have posted them. You can add an update by viewing the event listing on one of the event dates and adding an update.

Deletions

These can only be performed by an administrator. Please sent email to the webmaster .

Updates & Reviews

When you view an Event you may also add an Update or a Review. As with new event postings, if this site is moderated, then these postings will be examined by a moderator before being viewable to the general public. Updates will generally not be accepted unless they are from the person who originally posted the event.

The figure below points out the features and operations of the event log. Colors may differ as these options can be set by your webmaster.
