While it is straight forward to study the galaxies associated with active galactic nuclei (AGN) such as Seyfert galaxies, detailed studies of the the host galaxies of luminous QSOs have been difficult because of the extreme brightness of the QSO compared to the galaxy. We have been obtaining spectra of QSO host galaxies with the Keck 1 and 2 Telescopes and find a variety of phenomena in the galaxies. Very few are what would be called normal. Multiple epochs of star formation are common. Various kinds of AGN and QSOs can be connected through direction of view or evolution, and it is concluded the AGN and QSOs could have had a significant impact on the evolution of the intergalactic medium.

Refreshments will be served in the Steward observatory Lobby at 3:30pm
