The Sun workstation named "astro" is the main server for the Steward network of Sun workstations. It provides NFS service to its clients for Sun unbundled and non-Sun software and documentation. It provides peripheral service for a number of tape drives, CD readers, and the color printers. It is the primary nameserver, mail exchanger, and world wide web entry point. It is the boot and NFS server for Xterminals, vxWorks stations, and the modem server. It is used as a background compute server. It is also the central point of administration for our other ninety Suns. The Sun workstation named "cosmo" is the backup server, and most of the characteristics of "astro", apply to "cosmo" as well. In order to provide rapid response for all these services, and because there are no home or data directories on it, the interactive use of "astro" is highly discouraged. From a user's point of view, "astro" does not provide any additional functionality that is not found on the user's home workstation - there is nothing unique about astro that concerns the user. With a few minor exceptions, there is no reason for a user to ever login to "astro", and most of these exceptions can also be done via "rsh". These few exceptions include changing your password, starting background compute jobs, listing tapes, spooling large print jobs, and ejecting CDs. Your cooperation will help us keep a balanced load on the network and other computing resources. Thank you.
