Title: New Ways of Doing Time-Domain Astronomy: Supernovae, TDEs and Beyond
Abstract:
Observational time-domain astronomy is undergoing a transformation. A combination of novel infrastructure, observing polices and techniques are allowing us to react rapidly to new events and to coordinate between facilities in ways that enable new science. I will show some examples of how these advances are leading to new and surprising discoveries in the fields of supernovae and tidal disruption events. One critical component of such dynamical observing are tools that can coordinate and carry out follow-up observations, share the results and make decisions regarding the next set of observations, all in real time. I will briefly demonstrate SNEx, a tool I developed for this purpose currently being used for supernova and other transient observations at LCO. We are examining how such a system could be scaled to the LSST era, involving many more users, targets and science cases, while coordinating multiple observatories to ensure the most critical followup data is obtained.
