The United Kingdom's Royal Astronomical Society has granted UA astronomy Professor James Liebert an associateship, an honor bestowed upon only three individuals worldwide each year.
Liebert, who researches the evolution of stars, also works in the relatively new field of substellar objects, also known as brown dwarfs or "failed stars." He assembled a team to locate these stars, which cannot shine by their own nuclear power and must be found using infrared and deep optical surveys. In the past 10 years, Liebert and his team have located most of the substellar objects in the galaxy.

The Royal Astronomical Society associateships honor eminent people in astronomy who do not live in the U.K. Nominations are made by society fellows without the knowledge of nominees.

Liebert said that he was surprised and honored to receive the award.

As an associate of the society, Liebert will be able to attend and make presentations at society meetings, and will receive the journal Astronomy & Geophysics and the electronic journal Monthly Notices of the RAS.

The other recipients this year were Ewine van Dishoeck, professor at the University of Leiden, and Françoise Genova, director of the Centre de Données Astronomiques de Strasbourg.
